The territory, under the province of Pavia is 1,070 sq. Km. with lowland area under 200 meters s.l.m., hilly area area between 200 and 300 meters s.l.m. and over 350 meters, with peaks up to 1,724 meters s.l.m. The predominantly dry climate and the thermal excursions created by the updrafts of the mountain areas have made the Oltrepò an area very suitable for the production of grapes and wine. With its vineyard area of 13.269 hectares, the Oltrepò represents 60% of the entire surface area of Lombardy, while per hectolitre of wine produced, is the third area in Italy.

The oldest human settlements in Oltrepò date back to the Neolithic period (5,000-2,500 BC). Through the consular roads the Roman Empire took over and following its defeat came the barbarians who mingled with the stocks: Etrusco, Celto, Gallo, irioligure and Latino. The oldest Christian witness dates back to 453 and is the Christian tombstone of Oriolo.

Numerous, in Oltrepò, are the noteworthy frescoes present in several churches and chapels of important artists including: Michelino da Besozzo, Bernardino Rossi and Bartolomeo Suardi known as Bramantino.

The genotypes of Pinot Noir were cultivated in Oltrepò since the ancient Romans.
The first certain traces of production of Metodo Classico, in Oltrepò, date back to 1870.

Currently the Oltrepò represents the third area in Europe for the production of Pinot Noir.
